Nonsense Words

Anyone browsing through TRUST will see that it contains many lists of nonsense words, which are lists of non-words that rhyme with the real words in corresponding lists. How can these lists help frustrated students?

One of the stumbling blocks for problem readers is fear of failing... again... and again.  Each word encountered is a hurdle for them. They search their memories for a handle. Finding none, they guess.  Even if they’re right, little confidence develops.

Strangely enough, TRUST’s lists of nonsense words afford relief.  These words cannot be guessed, so a problem reader knows the words must be sounded out. Little by little, a solid foundation is established as the student becomes successful at using the sounds of the letters to figure out a word.
